The San Joaquin Valley is located in the Central Valley of California. It consists of seven Northern California counties and one Southern California county. Summers in the San Joaquin Valley are extremely hot and dry, with relatively moderate winters marked by dense tule fog. The rainy season is usually from November through April. The San Joaquin is the valley’s main river, which flows north through nearly half of the valley and into the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. Despite its rural nature, the valley contains densely populated urban centers such as Fresno, Bakersfield, Stockton, Modesto, Tulare, Visalia, Hanford, and Merced.
